Title of Position Camp Administrator and Camp Counsellor
Term July 2nd – 5th (training), July 8 – August 2, 2019 – Location: Fisher River Cree Nation Start date: July 2, 2019

Frontier College is a national, non-profit literacy organization that was founded in 1899. We work with children, teens, adults and families who need help to improve their literacy skills. We work with a variety of partner organizations to deliver volunteer-run, community-based programs across Canada. Frontier College is accredited under the Imagine Canada Standards program.

Frontier College’s Aboriginal Summer Literacy Camps began in 2005 as an initiative of the 27th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. The Hon. James Bartleman. These literacy and mental wellness camps aim to promote a love of reading and learning, as well as increased self-confidence in children and youth (between the ages of 6 and 15) living in isolated and/or fly-in only reserves in northern Ontario. Since then the camps have expanded to Manitoba, Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, & Quebec.
We are currently seeking mature, responsible, committed and self-motivated individuals to fill 1 Camp Administrator position, and 2 Camp Counsellor positions in our Indigenous Summer Literacy Camp being offered in collaboration with Fisher River Cree Nation.

Overall Accountability
The Camp Administrator & Camp Counsellors will be expected to work as a small, independent team to deliver a diverse array of indoor and outdoor literacy-based camp activities in a safe, caring and fun-filled environment. The Administrator & Counsellors must be prepared to demonstrate initiative and creativity to engage their community, and involve parents, elders and other community members in the camp curriculum.
Frontier College Camp Counsellors work very closely as a team reporting directly to the Camp Administrator, under the remote mentoring and supervision of the Camp Coordinator and the Regional Manager, with Frontier College.

Major Duties and Responsibilities (all positions)
 Day-to-day planning & organizing of camp activities
 Ensuring the safety and well-being of all camp participants during camp hours
 Establishing and maintaining good relationships with community members, and soliciting their participation in the camps
 Maintaining accurate camp records as required
 Gathering feedback from parents, campers & community members
 Ensuring that all camp documentation are maintained, and reported as required
 Ensuring adherence to all program directives and guidelines
 Attend and participate in all camp orientation, training and evaluation sessions
 Other duties as assigned by Frontier College

Major Duties and Responsibilities (Camp Administrator only)
In the addition to the duties & responsibilities listed above, the Camp Administrator is responsible for:
 Mentoring & supervising 3 camp counsellors
 Keeping daily attendance and tracking statistics for reporting purposes & accountability to funders
 Work with camp counsellors to report various camp data and submit completed reports each week to the Camp Coordinator
 Schedule Community members, parents and elders to have them come in to camp to do crafts, baking, traditional storytelling, or as a guest speaker.
 Purchasing supplies & snacks from local store(s) as needed

Skills and Attributes
 Minimum 18 years old
 A positive, friendly and approachable disposition
 Adaptable, self-motivated, responsible, enthusiastic, creative
 Superior planning, organizational and time-management skills
 Able to work with different personalities/working styles, even in challenging situations
 Strong situational problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills
 Be familiar with local organizations and upcoming/ongoing activities in the community
 Be familiar with local leaders, elders, culture, local customs and traditions

Additional Assets
 Possess Standard/Emergency First Aid certification, which is valid for the entire duration of employment
 Demonstrated experience working with groups of children/youth in a summer camp or literacy program setting

Screening & Selection:
Candidates will be screened through:
– Interview
– Reference Checks (Name and Phone number of 3 references will be required)
– Criminal Record Check* (CRC) & Vulnerable Sector Check* (VSC)

*Successful candidates must provide a current CRC (new or not older than 6 months) and VSC. Frontier College will cover the cost of the CRC and VSC (a receipt must be provided).

Compensation:
Camp Administrator  $18/hr for 30hr week, Camp Counsellor  $16/hr for 25 hrs week

Camp Training: July 2nd – 5th, 2019 (Training attendance is mandatory for all staff)
Training will be held in Winnipeg, MB. Expenses for mileage, accommodations and meals will be paid as per Frontier College’s travel policy.
